Award-winning
author Carlton Stowers follows the Penelope Wolverines though
the 2004 season in this book that searches in a six-man community
to find that simpler time in our lives prior to 9/11.
This is
a great read and terrific insight to a six-man program that
even die-hard fans know little about. Raised in West Texas,
Stowers is no stranger to small town life.
Many six-man
fans may wonder, "why Penelope?", a school that
hasn't won more that had not won more than one game in a season
before 2004.
Penelope
is a school where football returned in 2000 after an almost
50 year absence. What Stowers finds is that whatever the town
may lack in football tradition, it surely makes up in community
support. For the six-man fan, the insight to a team struggling
to find its own identity and build a tradition makes you pull
for the underdog Wolverines even more, as the season goes
on.
Stowers
is a tremendous writer who has twice won the Edgar Allen Poe
Award for Best Fact Crime Book of the Year and has been nominated
for a Pulitzer. He also written several books on sports including
MARCUS, the autobiography of Marcus Allen and DALLAS COWBOYS:
THE FIRST 25 YEARS.
SIX-MAN
FOOTBALL by Coach CH Underwood

This book
from Coach Underwood is an updated version of his classic
"Texas Six-Man Football", published in 1974. If
you do not know, Underwood was the coach of the very first
Texas six-man state champions at O'Brien in 1972.
For a
fan of six-man football, this book is loaded with tons of
history. For a coach or player, it is indespensible.
The original
was and remains the "bible" for six-man coaching,
if you can find it. But Coach Underwood has taken his original
work and supplemented it with sections from some of the best
coaches in history, such as: Roddy Maddox, Danny Medina, Harvey
Wellman, Nelson Campbell and Lupe Franco, to name a few.
The book
is broken down into six parts: The History and Development
of the Game, Offensve Strategies, How in the World Can We
Stop Them (defense), Rounding out the Game (special teams
and getting a team physically ready), Beyond the Texas Public
Schools and Miscellany.
In the
first section of the book, Underwood has photographs of every
Texas public school team that has reached the state finals,
as well as a wealth of information about the early game.
The second
section of the book, Offensive Strategies, is definitely the
meat of the book from a coaching standpoint. Included are
130 pages of descriptions and diagrams on how to score.
The reason
I say this book is great for fans (and parents) is that not
only is there some historical perspective on six-man, but
you also get insight of how some of the great coaches formulate
a plan for winning. The technical aspects are so sound, you
cannot help but understand the game better.

An amazing
book of photos by photographer Laura Wilson of Dallas.
Wilson
is best known in the six-man community as the photographer
who took the wonderful photos for the 1995 Texas Monthly article
on the Mullin Bulldogs. She is known also as the proud mother
of actor/writer/director sons, Luke and Owen.
Wilson
became a fan of six-man football after traveling to a game
with her husband in the early 1990's. Se has a tremendous
talent for capturing the moment and this book is a must have
for any six-man football fan.
