Valera (on the way to Panther Creek) has 2 of as good restruant's as you will find ! Big O's has as good BBQ steaks, briskets, and ribs anywhere. Across the highway is the Grazin Patch where you will find the best chicken fried steaks and other family orders (also buckets of peanuts - thro shells on floor, please). Friday nites on the way to PC ballgames, they have as good fried and grilled catfish and shrimp (all you can eat). Makes me hungry thinking about both places. I just may have to make a trip over there, tonite.

Re: Best Grease Burger and chicken fried steak.
If we are staying within the sixman realm, I agree that Mary's in Strawn has a 4-star CFS. If not, Ft. Hood's 1st Cav. CFS use to be "finger lickin good".
Once upon a time the Head Chef was from Amarillo and grew up cooking steak and nothing but steak from the age of eight until he joined up as a seventeen year old. His dad taught him how to cut and cook every steak there was from a beef cow. After arriving on base he accidently strayed off the premises one too many times. His captain threw him in the brig until the chaplain called and requested he eat supper with him at the best eatery in town. When he asked where that was the chaplain responded ..."the base brig".... Anticipating some kind of prank he showed up with the division photographer ready for the photo op'. Instead of pranks and humor the group was served the most incredible chicken fryed steaks they had ever tasted, along with mashed potatoes, Bermuda onions, green beans and homemade sourdough rolls. The captain was impressed and insisted to know the name of the cook. When the youngster from Amarillo strolled out the COs eyes popped out in surprise. The brig kitchen made the front page of the base newspaper for a month running. Needless to say that guy was cooking in the division kitchen as soon as he finished his sentence. He stayed at Hood almost three decades as an army and civilian chef.
Last I heard he was back in Amarillo cooking ribeye and t-bone for one of the local cattle auction restaurants, not sure which one.

Re: Best Grease Burger and chicken fried steak.
I have to mention that the place where I got the chicken fried taco now serves Dublin Dr. Pepper on tap! It has become a nightmare for me. I am so jacked up on fat, caffeine and sugar that my afternoons are shot... and now they are adding a location about 4 blocks from my house... I know I was raised in San Antonio and should have a propensity for density, but man I am doomed.
BTW, I just cooked a fabulous rib eye for New Years... mmmmmmmmmmm

Used to be a place in Brady called Weavers Smoke Shack. I have never come across a better chicken fried steak (or reasonable facsimile) anywhere in the United States, Mexico, Canada or Europe.

You mean they serve CFS outside Texas? Actually I'm trying to remember the name of one of the more popular Steakhouses in Fort Worth that 2-3-4 years ago advertised on the radio "Chicken Fried Ribeye's". I remember thinking, no, that's just wrong. You don't DO that to a ribeye. But I've never tried it. Who know's it might be yummy.

Went down to Austin to watch some of the girls basketball games, and found a place in Cedar Park called J&J BBQ, with the usual bbq fare, they also serve bbq nachos and bbq baked potato, but the also serve the best hamburgers, I highly recommend the Texan burger, its three quarter pound patty thats mighty tasty.

I will be cruzing through Texas next week and I will stop at Underwoods in Brownwood (duckin' the flamers) and Macs BBQ in Brady. Might try to set my course to get some Kolaches in West (North of Waco).

No doubt in my mind at all that Mary's in Strawn is the best CFS. Even Texas Monthly magazine agrees.
Hamburgers are hard to pick. The best I ever had was at Charlie's in Mansfield, but they have since closed. One that I highly recommend is Jucy's Burgers in Longview. Great burgers and be sure to try the beans. They are awesome.

Wrights Steak House next to lake Amistad west of Del Rio tops them all for CFS and they have the most delicious onion rings ever along with fanastic cold beer. Have a designated driver as having one is impossible! OMG is it ever yummy--go Eagles peace n love

Well Murdoch don't feel lonely, I'm stumped too. Forgive my ignorance but in these modern times of BFF's & FFY's I've slipped behind.
